Hurricane Preparedness

The Hurricane Season extends officially from June 1 to November 30.  There have been occurrences beyond the typical season.

There are seven basic rules you need to keep in mind:

Listen to weather updates on television, internet or radio.

Have a full tank of gasoline in your car.

Have a “GO” bag with important phone numbers, documents and medications in the event you need to GO quickly.  Many experts suggest putting official documents (driver's license, passport, medication list, etc.) in waterproof plastic bag.  Flashlight and backup batteries are helpful too.

Move any items that could be projectiles into an enclosed area. (Porch furniture, Pool Umbrellas, etc.)

Follow evacuation advisories.  At a certain point, it is too dangerous for first responders to answer calls, so plan accordingly.  I was told by one of our condo owners after one recent hurricane, “I stayed here.  I've never been so frightened in my life.  I will evacuate next time.”

Prepare for 3-5 days without water or electricity.

During the storm, stay away from windows as you could be hit with breaking glass.
